Lloyd Tokerud - Analytics Manager, First Choice Power Lloyd Tokerud is the Manager of Analytics at First Choice Power, a retail electricity provider in the deregulated Texas market. He leads a team of analysts and developers in creating a BI platform that the company uses to drive decisions and insight. Prior to joining First Choice, he worked nine years with PepsiCo, in the Finance function at their Frito-Lay division, where he learned best practices in corporate performance management and reporting. He is a native Californian who has obtained his Texas “green card” via marriage to a native girl. He found himself very unpopular with his friends and new family when he cheered the Giants to their victory over the Rangers in the last World Series. He holds an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin, and he and his wife live in Dallas with their new daughter.
The BI implementation at First Choice has been an effort to pull data from multiple transactional-based systems into a centralized sequel-server data warehouse. The architecture and design of that data warehouse has been shaped and optimized by the choice of Tableau as its reporting vehicle. Using BI concepts that put the speed of value creation at the front, they have built their data structures to leverage the power of Tableau to its maximum effectiveness in delivering actionable insights as soon as possible. As they tell their internal customers, “scope, accuracy, and speed – pick two.” Along the way, they have gone through an education of “hard knocks” that have left them with some practice lessons in what to do, and, as importantly, what not to do.
